Pet Health Center of La Jolla

Pre-Internship

Picture
My hopes and dreams for this internship is to be able to know the basics on becoming a veterinary.  For example, learning how to do blood work and the basics of dental hygiene for a pet or animal. I have a fear of failing this internship course. Which is my project for this internship. My internship helps pets that are in need or just seeing if they are healthy by a simple exam. More in depth for my project is blood work and dentist hygiene. We take blood from the pet to see if they have anything wrong with them. At the clinic they normally clean the pets' teeth and extract them if reason, like heaving a disease which makes their teeth black. It fits well for my education because I would like to go to a college for marine medicine. Also wanting to help animals around me.

These are the two machines I have been working with for blood work. The spindometry that looks like a mushroom spins the blood to separate the plasma which is what is used to study it.

Week 1

. What are you most surprised by during your first week of internship and why?
I am most surprised during my first week of my internship is by how easy they do blood work. It was pretty easy to keep up and learn the difference between before and after doing blood work. I try paying attention to what my mentor had taught me and try following what she did.
What goods and/or services does your company provide to the community and how do they consider their role in the community, responsibilities to society
The good services my company had provide to the community is by helping their pets stay healthy and alive. they consider their role by being very careful with their words and the physical help they do to the pets. Our responsibility is to make them happy with the results.

This is after spinning the blood. The blood is separated to the bottom and the cloudy pink is the plasma which shows that the dog was a bit chubby but healthy.

I choose to have 2 projects for this internship, one of blood work, two dental hygiene. Dental hygiene is simple for me because I don't have a license to actually perform the cleaning and extractions, Although I have learned the basics and how to set up the equipment for the coworkers. Blood work is more into the mechanical stuff. We put blood tubes into the machines and find out what is wrong with the pets which is pretty easy once you do it a couple times. You have to be careful on some of the machines buttons because you might choose something that the doctor isn't looking for in the blood. I am hoping for my final project to know how to do these things on my own without doing it step by step with my mentor. It would help the organization to do other things while I help with whatever they need, I like to be able to help the coworkers/owners and pets.

What has surprised you most while working at your internship?
What surprised me while working at my internship is how fast the coworkers work during surgery and dental. No matter how fast they do it they do a very good job in the end. During the dental cleaning and extractions the dog on the right (pictures) had really bad teeth with a bunch of bacteria and plaque it had. They extracted the bad teeth that would end up doing bad to the dog if they didn't and cleaned it.

What lessons or experiences at your internship will you bring back to school to help you to further improve your academics?

I would probably just ask more questions in depth and take more notes/pictures. Asking questions and taking pictures really help me so I remember. I especially took pictures on the lessons they taught me for example the pictures I have is when they explained the meaning of the lows and highs on the paper and the difference on the shots.
